“We’ve had presidents before who have never been in the military, so I really don’t think that is the operative question. I think a question that comes up in my mind certainly is how does a person who admits that he deliberately did not agree with a war and therefore did not want to go to that war-how does he handle it when he has to send other people to war? What’s he going to do about the people who don’t want to go to that particular war? This is a question I think that needs to be answered by the candidate himself”

“I am not a politician. I can assure you I have never considered myself to be a politician and the more I see of the current campaign, the more I think I don’t want to be a politician.”

“Eisenhower was drafted, when you get right down to it, but frankly I don’t think that I’m going to be drafted. I think I’m one of those people that doesn’t believe that all solutions to our nation’s problems lie in the central government. I think the American people have the solution to America’s problems and there’s a lot of places where you could make a contribution in this country without necessarily being a part of the political machinery. And that’s where I stand right now.”
