In any case, a sketch on Scorch’s “origin” that featured him overpowering a firefighter ultimately proved too stupid to move beyond.

The story was that Scorch was a remaining ember from a hellish blaze that destroyed Glen Falls, N.Y. in 1864. Very cute. The kids would’ve loved it. Alas.

“We’re extinguishing Scorch,” Flames president Brian Petrovek (Pun-trovek?) told the Glen Falls Post-Star on Tuesday. “The misjudgment we made was such that we came to that decision.”

The Post-Falls story also featured this terrific sentence:

Ever. Scorch is dead. Good riddance.
