Dixon is on the pole following Sunday’s qualifying session. The last time he started from that position, Dixon won in 2008 at the Brickyard.

“It was definitely a bit shock when I saw the first number. I thought the steering wheel was broken — broken in a good way,” Dixon told the Indianapolis Star. “The race for the pole is prestigious, it’s definitely something to get excited about. But it’s not winning the Indianapolis 500.”
He finished with a four-lap average of 226.760 mph. Reigning IndyCar series champion Will Power and teammate Simon Pagenaud will also start on the front row after finishing second and third, respectively.
Changes were made to the qualifying laps after Ed Carpenter, Josef Newgarden and Helio Castroneves all flipped their cars during Indy 500 practices throughout the week. Instead of having multiple sessions to determine who would be on pole, Indy officials decided that one session would be the deciding factor and that the cars’ horsepower would be turned down for safety, Yahoo! Sports reported.
The cars’ new aero kits are thought to be a factor in each of the crashes.
The last time a pole-sitter won the race was Castroneves in 2009.
