Set to be released by Universal, Oppenheimer will focus on the J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist and scientist who headed the Manhattan Project that was responsible for the creation of the atomic bomb. Frequent Nolan collaborator Cillian Murphy will play Oppenheimer, and he’s already told fans not to expect a standard biopic from the director.

Deadline broke the new about Quaid joining the cast of Oppenheimer, but details on his role are currently unknown. What is known is that Quaid will be joined by Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 star Dane DeHaan. Oppenheimer will mark Quaid’s first time working with Nolan. Universal reportedly had no comment on Quaid’s casting.
Oppenheimer also marks Nolan’s move to Universal after having worked with Warner Bros. on all of his feature films ever since 2002’s Insomnia. The fallout between Nolan and Warner Bros. was reportedly over the studios’ decision to release all of its 2021 films on HBO Max day-and-date with theaters. Nolan, whose most recent film for Warner Bros. was Tenet, has been an avid supporter of the theatrical experience, arguing that films, especially the kind he makes, are made specifially to be seen on the largest screen possible.
Of course, Nolan is probably going to deliver an interesting, if not excellent, film no matter which studio he’s partnering with. So, audiences are likely just hoping that Universal grants Nolan the creative freedom and theatrical release for Oppenheimer that he seemingly wants.
Oppenheimer is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 21, 2023.
