In order to make their fortune, Sea of Thieves players need to trade and work with the numerous companies across the open world. One of the more accessible of these is the Bilge Rats who operate the Black Market in-game. The Bilge Rats is a trading company that is represented in every tavern on the map.

Where is the Black Market?
Their Black Market is a fairly unique shop in Sea of Thieves and it hosts a number of desirable items and quests. The current representative for the company is Larinna, who is stationed at the entrance of every outpost tavern across Sea of Thieves. Approaching and talking with her opens up the Black Market menu as well as other conversation options pertaining to the company’s history.
Another NPC, Duke, was formally the go-to character that players had to approach for the Black Market. He was the only way for players to access the wares of the Bilge Rats before the November 2019 content update. Another Bilge Rat, Stitcher Jim, replaced Duke during this time as part of the Seabound Soul update. Duke eventually recovered from his adventures and returned to his post only to be completely replaced by Larinna in September of 2020.
There are different companies and groups in Sea of Thieves that players can work with to make themselves better and more successful pirates. The Bilge Rats’ emphasis is on adventure and sending players on new opportunities in-game. As such, they are quite the desirable company for players to get to know. At the Black Market, players can expect to find mercenary voyages, exchange doubloons for Letters of Recommendation, and exchange doubloons for gold.
When purchased, mercenary voyages in Sea of Thieves can lead players on unique Bilge Rat Adventures or offer access to hidden stashes with useful items. The first option asks players to partake in an adventure made to emphasize a feature (a mechanic or enemy) in the game. Successful completion of one of these voyages gives players doubloons, new commendations, and an improvement to the player’s reputation with the company.
Letters of Recommendation in Sea of Thieves improve a player’s reputation level with a specific trading company. There is a letter of recommendation for the Sea Dogs, Hunter’s Call, Merchant Alliance, Order of Souls, and Gold Hoarders. Players can only purchase one Letter of Recommendation per company every month, however.
Sea of Thieves is available now on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
